A Legacy of Crisis Response, Community Care, and Sustainable Development

GAHDA Community Support in Grand'Anse, Haiti

Prior to our recent strategic pivot to focus solely on breast cancer initiatives, GAHDA operated for many years as a vital, trusted first responder to frequent natural disasters and political instabilities affecting the Grand'Anse region of Haiti. Our legacy is built upon three pillars of impact: emergency relief, immediate humanitarian assistance, and long-term community development.

1. Emergency Relief & Disaster Response

Following catastrophic regional events — including Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and the severe 2021 earthquake — GAHDA mobilized extensive disaster relief operations to safeguard vulnerable populations and accelerate community stabilization.

  • Critical Supply Chain & Distribution: Coordinated the rapid deployment and dispersal of life-saving food parcels, essential medicines, and hygiene supplies directly to isolated, rural families.
  • Shelter & Housing Rehabilitation: Provided construction and building materials to over 3,000 individuals who lost their homes, enabling families to transition securely from displacement to long-term recovery.

2. The "Helping Hand" Safety Net

Designed to provide immediate, dignified, and non-judgmental support to marginalized groups and individuals living in extreme poverty, this grassroots program acted as a crucial safety net where institutional services were entirely absent.

Community-Embedded Care: Because our staff members are deeply integrated within the Grand'Anse community, they were uniquely trusted to intervene humanely during highly sensitive personal crises.

  • Emergency Healthcare & Transit: Covered vital emergency transportation costs to specialized medical facilities outside the region and procured essential daily medications for chronic illnesses.
  • Vulnerable Population Support: Provided reliable daily meals for elderly widows and critical postnatal support packages for new mothers.
  • Dignified End-of-Life Care: Assisted low-income families by covering immediate funeral and burial expenses during times of sudden personal loss.

3. Sustainable Development & Capacity Building

To move beyond temporary relief, GAHDA invested heavily in structures that foster long-term economic, educational, and institutional resilience across the Grand'Anse region.

Focus Area Key Initiatives & Impact
Economic Empowerment Empowered local women through targeted goat distribution livestock programs and fostered the growth of community micro-enterprises to build lasting household assets.
Educational Continuity Consistently funded school tuition, administrative fees, uniforms, and textbooks for primary school children to guarantee uninterrupted schooling during regional hardships.

Local Capacity Building: Collaborated deeply with regional religious leaders and incoming non-profit organizations to build local execution capacity and provide essential cultural orientation for those entering the Grand'Anse.
